3 Essential Truths About the Holy Trinity
1. The Trinity is the Foundation of Christianity
One God = Distinct Persons
Christianity stands on this non-negotiable truth: one God eternally exists in three distinct persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is revealed doctrine, not philosophical speculation.
The Trinity is the foundation of biblical Christianity. Each person acts according to role, never independently or in opposition. They are equal in essence, distinct in personhood, and inseparable in action. Deny the Trinity, and the gospel is lost; remove it, and salvation collapses.
All Three Were Involved in Creation
- God created all things “in Him,” Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:16).
- The Spirit of God was present and active, hovering “over the waters” (Genesis 1:2).
Creation was not the act of a solitary person, but of the triune God acting in perfect unity.
2. The Function of the Holy Trinity
Fully God = Equal in Nature
Each person of the Trinity is self-conscious and self-directing, fully God, equal in nature, and eternal. Yet no person ever acts independently of or in opposition to others. Their unity is perfect; their distinctions are real.
These are roles, not ranks. There is no hierarchy of essence—only distinction of function. In short, the trinity is one essence but distinct persons.
- The Father is the Originator—the source and planner of God’s redemptive will.
- The Son is the Agent—the one through whom the Father’s will is carried out.
- The Holy Spirit is the Applicator—the one who applies God’s work to creation and to believers.
The Trinity is not gender-neutral
All three persons of the Trinity are referred to with masculine personal pronouns in the Greek New Testament, indicating personal—not impersonal—reference.
- Greek NT: αὐτός (autos, “He/Him”); ἐκεῖνος (ekeinos, “He”)
- Hebrew OT: הוּא (huʼ, “He/Him”)
3. The Role of the Trinity in Man’s Salvation
Jesus affirmed the trinity
We have eternal life because of Jesus alone, yet salvation is Trinitarian in design and execution. Jesus explicitly affirmed the Trinity when He commanded baptism “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). One name, three persons—a clear declaration of unity of essence and distinction of persons.
- The Father loved the world and gave His Son (John 3:16).
- The Son accomplished redemption through His life, death, and resurrection.
- After Christ’s ascension, the Father and the Son sent the Holy Spirit to apply that finished work (John 14:16; 16:7).
The unique role of Jesus
Jesus uniquely became human to reveal God and accomplish salvation. He speaks the Father’s words and sends the Spirit. These are different roles within the Trinity, not lesser status; Jesus is fully God, equal with the Father and the Spirit.
