Five Most Important Checklist of a True Follower of Jesus
☑ Have you counted the cost?
We may still fall into sin but if you are in Christ, we become righteous before God. We become free from the condemnation of sin. This is called “grace” because of what His son Jesus did for us (2 Corinthians 5:21; Ephesians 2:8-9). However, if you deliberately continue to “love sin,” ask yourself if you are true follower of Christ (Hebrews 6:4-6). What Jesus did came at a great price.
☑ Do you do what pleases God, not what pleases you?
What Jesus did on the cross pleased God (John 8:29). Although He was King of all creations (Isaiah 9:6-7), He died for mankind. A true follower of Christ will desire to please Him. Being a “believer” is a lifestyle. Though you may still fail, do you constantly seek to abide in Him?. (John 8:31; John 15:4)
☑ Have you decided to turn your back from sin?
Repentance comes from the word metanoia which means “a change of mind, heart, and attitude towards sin.” It’s a spiritual conversion that you cannot do on your own. This does not mean we should be consumed in avoiding sin – we must focus on Jesus, not on our failures. God’s grace is sufficient, ask Jesus to help you and it begins with metanoia.
☑ What do I treasure most?
God tells us to work hard and whatever we do, do it for God’s glory (Colossians 3:22). Your priority in life is what you treasure most. Do you seek God first thing in the morning? Do you pray as often as you can? Most importantly, do you desire to share God’s words and His plan for salvation?
☑ Do I Bear the Fruit of the Holy Spirit?
A quick barometer to check if we are walking with Christ is by the “fruits” we have. Although we may not be perfect, a follower of Jesus is constantly being transformed into His likeness. The fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23).
