Dr. Ming Wang: The eye surgeon who found God in science
From poverty to becoming a doctor
Dr. Ming Wang, MD, PhD, is a world-renowned laser eye surgeon, recognized for pioneering vision correction procedures. With over 55,000 surgeries performed, his work has transformed lives worldwide.
Born in China, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1982 with only $50, knowing no one and barely speaking English. Defying the odds, he earned a PhD in laser physics from MIT and an MD from Harvard, bridging science, medicine, and faith.
WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT FAITH HEALING.
Perfect alignment
As an atheist, Dr. Wang’s study of the human eye reshaped his beliefs. He realized that trillions of cells must align perfectly for vision. “If even one is off, blindness results,” he said.
Then he questioned: “Can a pile of metal randomly form into a car? How about the human eye?” and realized that life was designed with purpose—there has got to be a creator. He later became a Christian.
ATHEISTS WHO BECAME CHRISTIAN.
Kajal, blinded by acid
Dr. Wang’s faith was tested trying to restore the sight of Kajal, a young girl left permanently blind after her stepmother poured acid into her eyes. Despite his expertise, the damage was too severe, leaving him devastated. “If God is loving, why allow such suffering?”
He wrestled with doubt for months, uncertain if he could continue his mission. Then, at Dr. Wang’s annual fundraising event, the “Eye Ball,” Kajal and her host families were special guests.
During the event, a young boy who spent time with Kajal told his father, “Dad, I’m okay. I don’t need an iPod anymore,” realizing there are more important things in life. This moment highlighted the profound impact of Kajal’s resilience on those around her, including Dr. Wang.
Despite losing sight, Kajal radiated strength and joy, inspiring those around her and facing a difficult life ahead with courage. Though Dr. Wang could not restore her sight, her story made him realize that “True vision” is about seeing, faith, gratitude, and resilience.
Faith and Science coexist
His autobiography, From Darkness to Sight, has been adapted into the 2023 film Sight, starring Terry Chen and Oscar nominee Greg Kinnear. The film captures his remarkable journey, proving that faith and science are not opposing forces but complementary truths.
