Busy Building an Empire of Dirt?

You could be building an empire of dirt

“Hurt” by Trent Reznor, Nine Inch Nails

Hurt was released in 1995, and Johnny Cash made a cover of the song in 2002. In 2017, it was used for the trailer of “Logan” (Wolverine movie). In Cash’s video, building wealth and fame is an empire of dirt if that’s all your purpose is in life; it will hurt you in the end.

“You could have it all, my empire of dirt”

The lyric is a perfect fit for Marvel’s Wolverine, but the cover sung by Cash had an entirely different meaning. Johnny Cash’s cover of “Hurt” reflects nothing is gained in wealthy wealth or fame. His empire of dirt.

“Everyone I know goes away in the end”

Everyone we know will die before or ahead of us. In fact, Johnny Cash’s wife died four months just before he did. He couldn’t imagine life without her. However, like Jhonny, those who belong to Jesus have hope, a promise of everlasting life. (1 John 5:13-13)

Johnny Cash is one of the most successful singers in the world. He worked and grew up on a cotton farm. After reaching success, he was drawn to alcoholism, drugs, and infidelity that broke his marriage.

Eventually, he realized that wealth and success don’t mean a thing when you’re old, useless, and without the love of your life.

Adaptation of the song “Hurt” for “Logan”

The surpassing greatness of knowing Jesus

Philippians 3:7-14
But whatever things were gained to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him.

Not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith, that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death.

In order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.

John Cash was an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, actor, and social activist. He is considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century and is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 90 million records worldwide. Although he had a troubled past, he knew that the love of Jesus covers a multitude of sins.

Lyrics of the song Hurt

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that’s real

The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end

And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar’s chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair

Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end

And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way
