Middle school student Liam Morrison from Middleborough suspended for wearing ‘two genders’ t-shirt
In 2023, Liam Morrison, a 12-year-old student at Nichols Middle School in Middleborough, Massachusetts, faced disciplinary action for wearing a T-shirt that stated, “There are only two genders.” His views on “two” gender and sex were deemed “false and harmful.”
Morrison was initially removed from his first-class after complaints about his shirt. The acting principal insisted he could only come back if he changed his attire. Refusing to comply, Morrison was sent home for the day, according to a report by the Boston Herald.
Instead, Liam wore a shirt with the phrase “There are censored genders” written on it. However, fearing detention and suspension, he refrained from wearing either shirt after that.
His views on “two” gender were “false and harmful.
The School’s Actions Are Illegal
The U.S. Constitution guarantees all students the right to free speech without fear of punishment from school officials. The actions taken against Liam are not just wrong—they are illegal. No student should be forced into silence when expressing their sincerely held beliefs.
The Fight for Liam’s Rights
In response to this violation, the Alliance Defending Freedom and the Massachusetts Family Institute have filed a lawsuit against the Town of Middleborough and school officials on Liam’s behalf.

His legal representatives drew parallels between Morrison’s shirts and signs displayed in school buildings advocating for the protection of transgender and gender non-conforming students, as well as expressing LGBTQ+ pride.
In July 2024, a judge in Middleboro denied Liam Morrison’s request to wear a “There are only two genders” T-shirt to school under the First Amendment. Both parties agreed to seek a final judgment, setting the stage for a potential appeal to a higher court.
