Pastors are not social media influencers—your job is to shepherd, not gain followers
A growing number of pastors today have become social media influencers, which is another way to spread the gospel. However, it can also lead to seeking popularity and affirmation at the expense of the Word. [Christian Leglaism]
It’s easy to spot them. They use clickbait to gain followers. Others dive into extensive politics and discuss controversies that do not edify the church. All these are distractions from a pastor’s mandate: to preach faithfully, shepherd, equip, pray, lead, and protect the church against false teachings.
1. Servant Attitude—Seek to disciple, not followers
Pastors are called to serve in humility, not build a personal brand or be “superstar pastors.” Pastoring is shepherding, not having sizable followers you cannot care for. The goal is to direct listeners to Christ, not to base one’s popularity on it as if it’s the measure of a successful ministry.
Galatians 1:10
“Am I now seeking the approval of man or God?”
THREE MAIN REASONS FOR DISCIPLESHIP.
2. Proclaim the Gospel—Not your brand
Pastors are sent to preach the Word, not to build a movement around themselves. The focus must remain on the Gospel of Christ, not personal influence.
The rise of megachurches in the 1990s gave rise to global brands like Hillsong and Elevate. Their church branding is more famous than Jesus. The same thing in social media. Some preachers have become brands, primarily using ads to generate revenue. [MTD]
2 Corinthians 4:5
“For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.”
3. You Are Not a Celebrity
Pastors are not celebrities, influencers, or politicians. Flashing your titles—Bishop or Reverend elevates your authority instead of Christ’s, for we are all servants of God. Instead, you should avoid the limelight and decrease! So that Jesus alone is exalted (John 3:30)
The bottom line is that Pastors should prioritize care for their congregation over fame on social media. While digital platforms can help spread the Gospel, the goal should always be shepherding, not gaining followers. [Gospel apologetics]
1 Peter 5:2-3
“Shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight…”
Avoid the limelight so that Jesus alone is exalted!
