Billionaire Henry Sy Jr., his testimony—tested by the tragedy of losing her own daughter

Henry Sy Jr. is the eldest son of Henry Sy Sr., the Philippines’ top billionaire. Their investments range from owning one of Asia’s biggest malls, land development, hotels, convention centers, banking, among others.

In 2019, Sy Sr. died. Months later, Henry Sy Jr. was able to share his testimony on God’s faithfulness in public. Two years later, tragedy struck at the heart of the family.

Jan Catherine Sy cause of death

On March 18, 2021, Henry Jr. lost his beloved daughter Jan Catherine Sy. She was 29. Jan didn’t feel good a few days before. She thought it was nothing serious.

She avoided going to the hospital out of fear of getting infected with Coronavirus. The Philippines ‘ second wave of COVID-19 surge practically closed hospitals.

Surely, she could have asked their family Doctors to come, but Jan took a pain reliever instead. No one suspected appendicitis. It was too late; sepsis took over.

James 4:14
…What is your life? It is just a vapor, appearing for a little while and then vanishing.

Could Jan Sy have avoided death?

The truth is, the moment we proclaim God’s glory in Christ Jesus, our enemy Satan, wants us defeated, destroyed, and even killed (John 10:10). One thing is sure; we all die someday because we belong to God, not in this world.

The question is, are you ready to meet God and prepared to give an account of things He asked you to do on earth?

Hebrews 9:27
…it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.

we all die someday because we belong to God, not in this world.

How could this be?

Henry Sy Jr. dedicated his life, family, and business to God’s glory. He walked with Jesus as a humble servant whose will is to love and serve God. Yet, God takes his daughter.

Like the brilliant Joyce Lin who died during a mission, many others faced death while serving God. John Chau was killed by the people he wanted to share the Gospel with.

Tragedies do not make sense—but it does to God.

A true child of God will be tested, if not taken back to His loving arms

Most of the apostles died suffering, while others, like Joy Tan Chi, raped by seven men. These tragedies do not make sense—but it does to God.

The Biblical Job faced even greater tragedy, losing his business and family. The LORD tested his faith, just as He test those who claim to love Him. After all, everything we have belongs to God.

Deuteronomy 29:29
The secret things belong to the LORD our God…

Everything we have belongs to God.

Henry Sy Jr.’s response on losing her daughter Jan

No parent should bury a child. But just like Mrs. Go, who lost all her three children, Mr. Sy was able to praise God amidst pain, doubt, and the whole cycle of denial, regret, anger, and acceptance.

He was able to utter the words, “Blessed be the name of the Lord. You give and take away. My heart will choose to say, Lord, blessed be your name!” Jan Catherine Sy is now with the Lord Jesus.

2 Corinthians 5:8
We are confident, and we would prefer to leave the body and to be at home with the Lord.

My heart will choose to say, Lord, blessed be your name!
