Popular CCM “Christian Songs” That Call for Discernment: “Way Maker”
Scriptures support titles
One of the most popular Christian songs recently sung in churches worldwide is “Way Maker”—an emotionally uplifting anthem. Its key titles—“Way Maker” (John 14:6), “Miracle Worker” (Matt. 4:24), “Promise Keeper” (2 Cor. 1:20), and “Light in the Darkness” (John 8:12)—are all supported by Scripture. However, it’s important to consider who composed the song and what the broader message promotes.
BIBLICAL QUALIFICATIONS OF A WORSHIP LEADER.
Influenced by a prosperity gospel church
“Way Maker” was written in 2015 by Sinach (Osinachi Kalu), a worship leader at Christ Embassy, which Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, a well-known preacher of the prosperity gospel. He teaches the core tenets of the Word of Faith movement, which include the following:
- Positive confession
- Divine health
- Financial breakthrough
- Faith-based declarations of blessings
Bethel Music popularized it
The song rose to global fame through covers by Leeland, Michael W. Smith, and Bethel Music (2019–2020). Bethel, led by Bill Johnson, who also promotes a prosperity-focused theology centered on miracles, prophecy, and dominionism, criticized for distorting biblical truths on suffering, repentance, and God’s sovereignty.
In other words, whatever Bethel promotes, be it music or preaching, will always be tainted with prosperity gospel messaging.
WHY CHURCHES SHOULDN’T LOOK LIKE CONCERT VENUES.
Way Maker Speaks of Jesus But Also Man-Centered
Pentecostal-Charismatic music shows a discernible pattern of engineered emotional highs and lows. “Way Maker” encourages listeners to feel Jesus but emphasizes counts more on His benefits, reducing worship to emotional reassurance. It presents a one-dimensional Christ as helper, prioritizing experience over theological depth (Luke 6:46; Isaiah 6; Acts 20:21; John 4:24).
