Silent No More: Mandy Harvey’s Journey of Faith and Music

Mandy Harvey always dreamed of becoming a vocal jazz teacher. Music was her life, her passion, her identity. But during her studies at Colorado State University, everything changed—she lost her hearing. Forced to drop out, she felt everything had been taken away.

A Crisis of Faith

Losing her hearing shattered her world. Questions arose—“Why me?” The church prayed for a miracle, but when her hearing didn’t return, some claimed her faith wasn’t strong enough. Feelings of abandonment, isolation, and hopelessness followed.

Romans 5:3-5 became a source of strength: suffering leads to perseverance, perseverance to character, and character to hope. Though understanding was complex at the time, God was planting a seed.

Finding Purpose Again

A conversation with her father became a turning point. Admitting, “Dad, I don’t remember how you sound,” was heartbreaking but also led to acceptance. Learning ASL, connecting with the Deaf community, and rebuilding confidence were crucial steps in rediscovering a sense of belonging.

One day, picking up a guitar—not to hear, but to feel—sparked something new. Through muscle memory, she sang again. That moment reignited a passion thought to be lost.

God’s Unexpected Plan

After a year and a half, a song was recorded and shared with a former vocal coach. Encouraged to continue, training resumed, relying on vibrations, trust, and faith. Small jazz lounge performances eventually led to the stage of America’s Got Talent. Winning the golden buzzer was more than recognition—it was confirmation that God still had a plan.

Trusting in His Timing

Faith isn’t about getting what is wanted—it’s about trusting God through the struggles. Romans 8:28 says, “All things work together for good for those who love God.” Hearing loss wasn’t the end; it was a new beginning.

Encouragement for Others

For anyone struggling, it’s okay to mourn, but pain doesn’t have to define the future. God never promises a life without trials, but He does promise to walk alongside those who trust Him.

A voice once thought lost now sings—not just in sound, but in faith, to glorify Him.

“When falling, it is always possible to get back up. Moving forward is always an option.”
