Could you be Messiah?

Gary’s award-winning stage director and friend Freddie Santos loves the Lord and often finds himself talking to Him whenever wherever. Direk Freddie as he is called was at a bar lounge where he was rehearsing a comedy act at a nightclub. It was about 2 p.m. when he felt he needed to write down words that he felt strongly about.

In 17 minutes, Direk Freddie penned Gary’s most endearing inspirational song that would move the hearts of many to know Jesus. Direk Freddie wrote the lyrics with awe as if he was transcribing divine revelation.

Without hesitation, Direk Freddie called Gary out of nowhere and asked if he would consider writing music to a song, Gary said yes. When Direk Freddie arrived at Gary’s house, the first thing that Gary said was that he was really busy. Direk Freddie showed Gary the lyrics and he said nothing.

Gary just sat at the piano and tried a few chords or whatever melody he can make out of the few minutes he can spare. The mood suddenly changed. Gary looked at Direk Freddie and said, “Let’s go upstairs” (Gary’s studio is the attic). It was about 5 p.m when they went up and didn’t come down until it was 5 a.m. Gary practically never left the studio that night and remained with his keyboards.

Gary was so moved to finish writing the music that befits the lyrics, even when his fingers hurt. Gary would prick his fingertips so he could measure his sugar level every now and then. The same fingers would pound the keyboards seconds after, he was just as inspired as Direk Freddie was to the message of the song.

Could you be Messiah? was well written both in lyrics and melody. It’s a beautiful piece recorded in 1991 that is still played and sung all over. Although well known especially among Christians, it takes real talent to interpret the song. The high pitch and vocal aerobics are not easy to cover but when Gary sings the song, you know God hears it.

The song that Freddie Santos wrote can also be somebody else’s prayer. Perhaps you may be struggling with emptiness or loneliness. Take heart for Jesus has overcome all things.

Like Direk Freddie and Gary, all of us were lost at one time or the other and Jesus is indeed the Messiah that can only fill the void in our heart.

Lyrics of the song “Could you be Messiah?” written by Freddie Santos

Could You be healer
To a heart that’s been wounded
In a battle that’s never seen

Could You, be teacher
To a mind of confusion
Tell me what does this all mean

Are You deliverer
Of an imprisoned feeling in chains
Can You set my spirit free

And just one more question
Allow me this question
Could You be Messiah to me (2x)

Could You be father
To a soul that’s been abandoned
By a world too busy to hear

Could You be friend
To a helpless survivor
Can You take away my fears

I heard them all sharing
This new found conviction in them
Are You all that they make You to be

And just one more question
Allow me this question
Could You be Messiah to me, please be Messiah to me

Now I’ve been looking for someone like You
And I’m so tired, I’m tired
I’ve read every book and I’ve sang every song

My mind maybe right but my heart feels so wrong
Tell me how much further can my life go along
Which way do the roads lead where do I belong…

Are You forgiver
Of my most unknown secrets
Provider of all that I need

Could You be brother
The one who knows better
Would You now stand in the lead

When all this is over all the thunder and lightning
In the daylight just what will I see
The answers to my questions to all of my questions

Could You be Messiah to me (2x)
Could You be Messiah
Please be Messiah to me…

  1. This song helped me in the darkest part of my life
    I’ve been a christian for years, yet I felt like I didn’t
Have God in my life. Apparently, I never knew Him
This song completely describes what kind of a struggle I was going through
As if this was made just for me
“Now I’ve been looking for someone like You
And I’m so tired, I’m tired.”
It was the lyrics that brings me to my knees
It made me honest, made me tell to myself that I need a savior
Then in the middle of my darkness, I decided to read my Bible
Every scripture, every word was speaking to me, God was in my midst all along
It felt like I was only starting to know God and Who he truly is

I know there will be harder times and darker nights
But I know Who is God to me and Who am I to God
I belong to Him no matter what, and that’s all that matters
