Tired of being told what to do by your parents?

Are you tired of being told what to do by your parents?

The Bible instructs parents to bring up their children to discipline and instruction—without provoking them to anger (Ephesians 6:4). Unfortunately, not all parents can be patient—and not all children are obedient.

In ancient Jewish culture, rebellious children who are drunkards, gluttons, and curse their father or mother are stoned to death (Leviticus 20:9). Perhaps the law was meant to scare kids, but the point of the puritanical law was that respect and obedience should be strictly observed.

There are blessings when you obey

  1. You will have a long life: God commands, “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. (Exodus 20:12)
  2. God will bless your career: “If you follow My statutes and faithfully observe My commands, I will give you rain at the right time, and the land will yield its produce, and the trees of the field will bear their fruit. (Leviticus 26:3-4)
  3. You become wiser: The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advise. (Proverbs 12:15)

A time will come no one will tell you what to do

Asian parents can sometimes be controlling. They push kids to study and obey house rules even if they are old enough. In the USA, 18 years old can make decisions without parental consent. Parents can no longer oblige them.

The only time NO ONE will tell you what to do is when you move out of your parent’s house. That also means you have to pay your rent (or buy our house), get your car, pay for the electricity and cook your food.

In short, unless you have a job and can take care of yourself, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. (Ephesians 6:1)

Parents live longer when children are obedient and respectful

Studies show that obedient and respectful children help parents live longer. Likewise, God gives long lives to obedient children. Towards the end days, more children will be disobedient. Do not be like them.

Keep your father’s instructions, and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. Do not despise them either when they are old. (Proverbs 1:8; 23:22)
